A Meditation for When Your Burdens Are Too Great

I wrote a blog post about raising your vibration, which has some suggestions for raising your vibration when you are feeling down.  But there are times when it feels like you simply cannot escape your feelings of sadness, hopelessness, anger, regret, or general sense of being burdened.  Perhaps something terrible has happened in your life, or you are faced with a challenge that seems too great, or something is out of your control that feels overwhelming to you.

Here is a very simple technique that I have found immensely helpful for raising my vibration in these times.

First, lie on a mat on the floor, face down.  Spread your arms out straight on either side of you.  Take a couple of deep breaths.  And then, envision your burdens being released into the earth.  Whatever is hurting your heart, whatever is weighing you down, whatever just feels too great a burden – just release it into the earth.  Feel the earth beneath you, absorbing it all. Lie there however long it takes, until you no longer feel heaviness pouring out of you.  

Then roll over so you a lying face up.  Feel your back against the ground (in Buddhism it is said that to be open-hearted, your back must be strong and your front must be soft – feel the support of the earth against your strong back).  Close your eyes. Take several deep breaths.  Now envision a bright light from high above you.  Envision it come down and covering the crown of your head and going into your body.  Feel the light pour into your body, down through your head, your heart, your belly, into your legs and all the way through the bottom of your feel.  Now envision the light continuing down all the way into the center of the earth, where it meets with another warm source of light.  Now see the light bounce up like from a trampoline – from the center of the earth back up into your feet and up your body and into your heart.  Feel the light fill your heart.  Now envision the light pouring out of your heart so that it covers your entire body.  And then feel it continue to pour out so that it fills the entire room you are in, and then entire building you are in.  Now envision the light continuing to pour out so that it covers your city, and then your state.  Let the light pour out so it is covering the entire country, and then the entire continent.  And finally, envision the light pouring out of your heart until it is covering the entire planet.  Feel your connection to all living things – the universal love that is now directly connected to you.  Continue to breathe deeply as you feel this connection.

Repeat as often as necessary.  There were some days over the past month that I found myself needing to do this two or three times a day.  But each time I did, my vibration was raised and I was able to continue on with my day, when before I had felt incapacitated by my low vibration.
